Chief Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Sullivan was born in 1962 in Washington, D.C. Judge Sullivan was raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland. He attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and graduated in 1984. He received his J.D. degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1987.

Upon graduation from law school, Judge Sullivan served as a law clerk to the Honorable Joseph S. Casula on the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, Maryland. From August 1988 to September 2006, Judge Sullivan was a partner at the law offices of Sullivan & Sullivan in College Park, Maryland. From October 2006 until his appointment, he was a partner at Brennan Sullivan & McKenna LLP in Greenbelt, Maryland. On December 20, 2012, Judge Sullivan was sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge for the District Court for the District of Maryland.  He was appointed Chief Magistrate Judge on September 1, 2023.

Admitted to the bar of Maryland in 1988, Judge Sullivan was also admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia in 1989. He is also a member of the bars of the United States Supreme Court; the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; the United States District Court for the District of Maryland and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
