The United States District Court for the District of Maryland has designated Bankruptcy Judge Nancy V. Alquist as the chief bankruptcy judge for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. Chief Bankruptcy Judge Alquist began her seven-year term on June 1, 2012. Bankruptcy Judge Duncan W. Keir ended his term as chief bankruptcy judge on May 31, 2012. A formal “passing of the gavel” ceremony will be held later this year.
Under 28 U.S.C. § 154(b), the United States District Court is responsible for designated a bankruptcy judge as the chief bankruptcy judge. By statute, practice, and policy, the chief bankruptcy judge has a variety of administrative responsibilities within the United States Bankruptcy Court.
