The Honorable J. Frederick Motz

Monday, October 23, 2023

The Honorable J. Frederick Motz died this morning in Baltimore, after a lengthy illness.

Judge Motz was appointed as a U.S. District Judge in 1985 after serving as the United States Attorney here.  In 1994, he became Chief Judge and served in that role until 2001.  He assumed senior status in 2010.

Judge Motz was not just deliberate and fair, he was an innovator, a natural leader, and one of the most productive judicial officers ever to preside in this District.  His relationships were characterized by warmth, kindness, and a deep appreciation for the human condition.  His colleagues and the Court staff deeply mourn his passing.
