IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT

FOR THE DISTRICT OF MARYLAND

Notice of the Resignation of the Honorable George J. Hazel, United States District Judge

On December 7, 2022, the Honorable George J. Hazel announced his intention to resign as a United States District Judge, effective February 24, 2023.  Judge Hazel was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as a United States District Judge on September 25, 2013.  He received his judicial commission on May 2, 2014.  Judge Hazel sits in the Court’s Southern Division in Greenbelt, Maryland.  Earlier today, Judge Hazel stated:

Today, I have notified the President that, on February 24, 2023, I intend to resign my position as a United States District Judge for the District of Maryland.  After 18 years of public service, the last eight and one-half years spent on the federal bench, I will be returning to private practice.

While I am excited about my next chapter, I will deeply miss my wonderful colleagues and the entire courthouse community.  It has been the highest honor and privilege to serve the public as a United States District Judge, and I will always cherish my time on the Bench.

Judge Hazel’s colleagues thank him for his years of faithful service as a U.S. District Judge.  He is a valued colleague whose insight and wisdom will be missed.
