Selection of Chief U.S. Probation Officer

Randall H. Canal, Jr. will retire as Chief Probation Officer for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland on July 17, 2021.  Mr. Canal has been in the Probation & Pretrial Services Office since 1998, and has served with distinction as Chief since 2018.

Chief Judge James K. Bredar announces that the Judges of the United States District Court have selected Leon A. Epps, Jr. to succeed Mr. Canal as Chief Probation Officer.  Mr. Epps has provided over 22 years of service in this District’s Probation & Pretrial Services Office, most recently serving as Deputy Chief Probation Officer since 2012.  Earlier, he served as a Supervisory Probation Officer and Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist.  Mr. Epps began his career in this District as a Probation Officer in 1998.  He is a 1992 graduate of Xavier University.
