Judge Stephanie Agli Gallagher was born in 1972 in Rockville, Connecticut. She attended Georgetown University and graduated magna cum laude in 1994. She was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She received her JD degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1997.
Upon graduation from law school, for two years, Judge Gallagher served as law clerk to then-Chief Judge J. Frederick Motz of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. From August of 1999 to December of 2001, Judge Gallagher worked as a litigation attorney at the law firm of Akin Gump in Washington, DC, where she handled both civil and criminal cases. In January of 2002, Judge Gallagher was appointed as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, where she served until September of 2008 prosecuting criminal cases ranging from fraud to violent crime. In October of 2008, Judge Gallagher co-founded Levin & Gallagher LLC, a litigation boutique handling both civil and criminal matters.
In 2011 Judge Gallagher was appointed a United States Magistrate Judge for the District of Maryland. She continued in this position until 2019, when she was nominated by President Trump to be a United States District Judge. After being confirmed by the United States Senate on September 11, 2019, Judge Gallagher received her commission on September 13, 2019.
Judge Gallagher is a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Bar Association, Maryland Chapter, and a member of The Barristers Law Club, The Lawyers' Round Table and The Wednesday Law Club. In addition, she is a member of the bars of the United States Supreme Court; the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
